Alaska Aces News Release
VICTORIA, BC â Mike Lee and Joe Talbot scored in the final six minutes of the second period to snap a scoreless tie as Alaska pulled away late to emerge with a 3-0 triumph over Victoria Saturday at Bear Mountain Arena.
After scoring two first period goals on the power play the night before in an eventual 5-1 victory, the Aces had to remain patient Saturday, as the Salmon Kings managed to stay on even terms through the first 30 minutes. Alaska slowly began to wear Victoria down, however, and with the home team having trouble getting out of its own end, Lee pounced on a loose puck and snapped a wrist shot past Kings goaltender Kelly Shields with 6:08 left in the second period to break a 0-0 deadlock.
Lee's first goal since November 20 (also against Victoria) seemed to deflate the Salmon Kings. Victoria failed to generate even one shot on goal on its first three power plays of the game, and after coming up empty for the third time, fell behind 2-0 when Kimbi Daniels found Talbot streaking through the middle for an uncontested breakaway against Shields. Talbot made no mistake, and his goal with 63 seconds left in the middle frame marked his third of the series and his 13th of the year.
Cal Benazic's second goal in as many nights, on an Alaska power play at the 7:48 mark of the third period, ended the competitive phase of the game, as the Aces were content to coast home with their fourth straight road victory, all at the expense of the Salmon Kings, who now own the third-longest winless streak in ECHL history at 15 games (0-14-1). Aubry never faced more than seven shots in any one period in running his personal unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2).
Coupled with San Diego's loss to Pensacola, Alaska (21-13-4) now shares third place in the West Division with the Gulls heading into its final meeting this season with the Salmon Kings, scheduled for tomorrow at Noon AST. The Aces have taken the last six meetings between the two clubs by a combined score of 34-10. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with coverage beginning 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
