Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads tried to do something they haven't done since December 10th and 11th - win two consecutive games. They'll have to wait for another day as they lost the rubber match 4-2 to the Bakersfield Condors tonight before 4,800 fans at the Bank of America Centre.

The Steelheads demise can be attributed to a shorthanded goal against, a turnover that led to another Condors' tally, and an empty-netter. Idaho's netminder Colin Zulianello stopped 27-30 shots, and his record fell to 4-7-1 while Condors' Yutaka Fukufuji stopped 29-31 Idaho attempts, and improved his record to15-5-2.

Bakersfield had three power play opportunities to start the game, but it was Idaho who capitalized on its first power play chance with the lone goal of the period. Idaho had been applying pressure in Bakersfield's zone and it paid off when Brett Draney took a shot that got up high over Fukufuji and dropped in the net at 11:39.

Bakersfield's Brett Lutes knotted the game on a slap shot from the blue line that beat Zulianello at 4:17 of the second period. The Condors were sent to the box on back-to-back minor penalties, however, it was Bakersfield who scored. The shorthanded goal was given up on an Idaho turnover when Dylan Mills' shot deflected off Zulianello's blocker at 9:41. Minutes later Bakersfield was in the box again giving Idaho a five-on-three for nearly two-minutes, but though Idaho had several really good chances to score, they could not find the back of the net. Instead, Bakersfield tallied to gain a two-goal lead as Vlad Serov was left alone to skate in and deke out Zulianello.

Idaho closed the gap and inched closer when Riley Riddell skated the puck down the boards and outmuscled the Condors to get the pass over to defenseman David Cornacchia. Cornacchia's shot beat Fukufuji, glove side and breathed new life into Idaho. Head coach John Olver pulled Zulianello to add an attacker for a final run, but Bakersfield gained control of the puck and tapped in an empty-netter to seal the game.
