2003 ECHL All-Star Game Produces Group of AHL Players

PRINCETON, N.J. - The 2003 ECHL All-Star Game was the second time that coaches were asked to name those ECHL players who the coaches felt would have the opportunity to move up within the professional hockey ranks to the American Hockey League and perhaps eventually the National Hockey League.

Under contract to Edmonton of the NHL, Mike Bishai was named to the ECHL All-Star game in his first professional season. In 2003-04, Bishai made his NHL debut with Edmonton, recording two assists and 19 penalty minutes in 14 games, and also had 33 points (11g-22a) in 48 games with Toronto of the AHL. In 35 games with Edmonton of the AHL in 2004-05, Bishai has 18 points (4g-14a).

Named to his second consecutive appearance in an ECHL All-Star Game in 2003, Kevin Colley was named MVP of the 2003 Kelly Cup Playoffs after scoring 13 goals and 20 points in Atlantic City's run to the Kelly Cup Championship. Colley spent all of 2003-04 in the AHL with Bridgeport, scoring 31 points (12g-19a) in 78 games. Signed by the New York Islanders to an NHL contract in August 2004, Colley has 13 points (7g-6a) in 40 games with Bridgeport in 2004-05.

Named to the ECHL All-Star Game and the ECHL All-Rookie Team in 2002-03, Mike Glumac scored 52 points (28g-24a) in 80 regular season games and six points (3g-3a) in 10 playoff games with Worcester of the AHL in 2003-04. Under contract to the St. Louis Blues of the NHL, Glumac has 26 points (11g-15a) in 41 games with Worcester in 2004-05.

Adam Hauser is currently playing for Manchester in the American Hockey League as are many others from the 2003 game. Selected to the ECHL All-Star Game in his first professional season, Hauser is 10-4-0 with a goals-against average of 1.91 in 15 games playing for first-place Manchester.

Jim Henkel was selected to the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game and helped Atlantic City win the Kelly Cup Championship in his first professional season. In 2003-04, Henkel scored 25 points (14g-11a) in 22 regular season games and had two assists in two Kelly Cup Playoff games for Atlantic City. He had three points (2g-1a) in 15 regular season games with Grand Rapids of the AHL and 24 points (11g-13a) in 35 regular season games with Lowell of the AHL. He also played three regular season games with Worcester of the AHL and notched an assist in one playoff game with Providence of the AHL. Currently under contract to Carolina of the NHL, Henkel has three assists in 23 games with Lowell in 2004-05.

Named to the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game, J.J. Hunter scored 28 points (12g-16a) in 56 games with Toronto of the AHL and three points (2g-1a) in four games with Columbus of the ECHL in 2003-04. In 30 games with Edmonton of the AHL this season, Hunter has 13 points (7g-6a).

Jason Jaffray was voted as a starter for his second consecutive All-Star Game in 2004 and was named All-ECHL Second Team and finished third in Most Valuable Player. Jaffray was third in the league with 37 goals and had 74 points in 54 games with Wheeling while registering an assist in five games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. In his first professional season in 2002-03, Jaffray was named First Team All-ECHL, to the ECHL All-Rookie Team and ECHL Rookie of the Year after scoring 85 points (34g-51a) in 64 games with Roanoke. The 23-year-old Jaffray opened the 2004-05 season with Wheeling, scoring 12 points (6g-6a) in 23 games, but was loaned to Cleveland of the AHL in December where he has six points (3g-3a) in 18 games.

Named to the ECHL All-Star Game and the ECHL All-Rookie Team in his first professional season in 2002-03, Zenon Konopka scored 28 points (6g-22a) in 23 regular season games with Idaho and 17 points (9g-8a) in 17 Kelly Cup Playoff games as the Steelheads won the Kelly Cup in 2003-04. Signed to a contract by Anaheim of the NHL, Konopka has 26 points (10g-16a) in 44 games with Cincinnati of the AHL in 2004-05.

Selected to the All-Star Game in his second professional season, Justin Morrison spent all of 2003-04 with Manitoba, scoring 36 points (18g-18a) in 66 games. In 34 games with Manitoba this season, Morrison has seven points (3g-4a).

Mike Smith was named to the ECHL All-Star Game in his first professional season. He spent 2003-04 with Utah of the AHL and was 8-11-0 with a goals-against average of 2.83 and a save percentage of .908 in 21 games while also spending time in the NHL as the backup for Dallas. In 27 games with Houston of the AHL in 2004-05, Smith is 14-10-0 with a goals-against average of 2.39 and a save percentage of .915.

Named to the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game as a rookie, Dustin Wood scored eight points (2g-6a) in 75 games with Springfield of the AHL in 2004-05. Signed to a two-year contact with Phoenix of the NHL in 2004, Wood has five points (2g-3a) in 40 games with Utah of the AHL this season.

Defenseman Jonathan Zion was voted as a starter for the 2004 All-Star Game, making his second consecutive All-Star appearance having been selected as a rookie for the 2003 game. In 2003-04, Zion played in the ECHL with Reading and Greenville and in the AHL with Manchester and Syracuse. He scored 28 points (6g-22a) in 29 games with Reading and three points (2g-1a) in seven games with Greenville while registering two assists in 19 AHL games. Under contract to Utah of the AHL, the 23-year-old Zion played two games with Utah in 2004-05 and has scored 18 points (2g-16a) in 34 games with Idaho which acquired him in a November trade with Bakersfield.
