Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, Pa - Shain Stoner belted his third homer in two nights as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, stayed hot and won their fifth straight by dropping the Schaumburg Boomers 11-0 on Friday night in front of 2,048 at CONSOL Energy Park.

Wild Things' center fielder Darian Sandford became the new Frontier League stolen bases leader Friday night with a stolen base in the bottom of the third inning.

On the season, Sandford has swiped 66 bases on 95 attempts this season, spent between Southern Illinois and Washington.

Washington struck with a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Gus Benusa that scored Sandford.

Barnes helped himself out defensively in the fourth inning by taking part in a play at the plate. On a ground ball that got past Shain Stoner into right field, Steve McQuail went from first to third on the play and made the turn for home. An errant throw from Gus Benusa got past Michael Bando at first and careened towards the dugout.

Backing up the play, catcher Rick Deveraux fielded the wild throw and threw to Barnes covering home, who applied the tag to retire McQuail and preserve a 1-0 lead.

A.J. Nunziato gave Barnes and the Wild Things a little breathing room with triple to the gap in right-center field that sored Darian Sandford and Andrew Heck to make it 3-0.

Benusa followed two pitches later with a single through the right side to score Nunziato from third to make it 4-0 Wild Things.

After a walk to Mark Samuelson, Devereaux came up to the plate and smoked one over center fielder Jerome Milons' head that got to the wall. Scoring on the play was Benusa and Samuelson, giving Washington a 6-0 lead.

In the sixth, Andrew Heck added another run with an RBI single to score Sandford to make it 7-0.

With that 7-0 lead, Washington continued to stay persistent, and erupted with another big inning in the seventh plating four runs.

Benusa and Devereaux each singled with one out, and then Shain Stoner, arguably the Things' hottest hitter over the homestand connected on a three-run homer down the left field line to make it 10-0 Washington.

Jovan Rosa, the very next batter launched his third homer of year, a bomb off the scoreboard in left-center to make it 11-0 Wild Things. The Wild Things go for the series victory tomorrow night with Justin Hall on the mound.
