Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Reid Kelly struck out 10 batters over seven innings including his 100th of the season as the Traverse City Beach Bums topped the Road Warriors 3-2.
Both pitchers were fantastic early on as both Kelly and Shawn Marquardt tossed six shutout innings to open the game. Kelly was the more dominant of the two, striking out a batter in every inning, including two in the third before whiffing the side in the fifth. His second punchout of the third inning was Kelly's fourth of the game and his 100th of the season, joining Ryan Platt as the only Beach Bums pitchers to fan 100 batters or more in a single season.
The Road Warriors got on the board first in the seventh as Doug Thennis tripled off the wall in right. The relay throw skipped by Jose Vargas and went into the Traverse City dugout, allowing Thennis to score and giving the Road Warriors a 1-0 lead.
It was a shortlived lead as in the bottom of the inning Chase Burch walked and then moved to third on a Jeff Flagg single. Two batters later, Sean Gusrang waited out a 2-1 count before turning on a fastball on the inner half, driving the ball over the wall for his 15th homer of the season and a 3-1 Beach Bums lead.
The Warriors weren't finished as they manufactured a two out run in the eighth when Matt Wright tripled home Jacob Daniel to slice the TC edge to 3-2. Traverse City then called on Matt Miller who was able to strike out Ryan Kaup before pitching a scoreless ninth to earn his 12th save.
Kelly (10-3) earned the win allowing one run on two hits over seven innings. A start after setting a career-high with 11 strikeouts against Lake Erie, the right-hander turned aside 10 Road Warriors on strikes. Marquardt (2-5) took a tough luck loss.
The series continues on Saturday with Salute to the Great Outdoors Night. Jacob Clem (6-4, 3.09) will take the mound for Traverse City against Greg Hendrix (0-2, 7.82) for the Road Warriors. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
