Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, broke their 11-game losing streak on Friday at the Corn Crib, beating the Joliet Slammer 5-4.
The 'Belters opened up the scoring after three straight walks in the second inning. Bobby Rinard, Randy Wells and Trey Manz all reached first on walks. After a wild pitch and two Joliet errors in the inning, both Rinard and Wells crossed the plate to give Normal a 2-0 lead.
Normal added two more to their lead after another lead off walk to Sam Judah. Judah went to third base after the third wild pitch of the night and another error for the Slammers. He was driven home when Wells hit a two-run home run, his second home run of the season. CornBelters left the third inning with a 4-0 advantage.
The Slammers got their first run in the seventh inning after David Christensen reached base on a wild pitch. He advanced the third on a single by Andrew Brauer and came home on an RBI single hit by Matt Mirabal, cutting Normal's lead to 4-1.
Joliet continued their quest of a comeback in the ninth inning when pinch hitter Josh Lyon nailed a two-run home run to right field, bringing Brauer home with him. The scoring continued when Brad Netzel reached base after being hit by a pitch. He then came all the way home from first after a throwing error by the CornBelters, tying the game at 4-4.
The CornBelters fought their way back in the 10th, loading the bases with no outs. The winning run was walked home during Wells' at bat, leaving the final score at 5-4.
Normal's Tyler Stovall (2-9) received the win while Chase Doremus (2-4) of Joliet was credited with the loss.
The 'Belters will play the second game of the series tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Corn Crib. Normal will put righty Tyler Lavigne (5-9, 4.40 ERA) on the mound to face right-handed pitcher Jacob Sanchez (4-2, 3.09 ERA). Pregame begins on WJBC.com at 6:20 p.m.
It's a State Farm Super Saturday! The St. Louis Rams Cheerleaders will be here to host a pre-game clinic for all cheer & dance squads. Participating squads will have a chance to perform on the field and take part in a private meet & greet with the Rams Cheerleaders.
There will be a silent auction throughout the game, where you will be able to bid on your favorite player's away jersey!
