Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-57) @ NORMAL CORNBELTERS (28-65)
Friday, August 31 - 6:30 p.m. CT
The Corn Crib - Normal, IL
Game #93 - Road Game #46 (35-57), (17-28)
RHP #28 Jim Schult (5-8, 4.83 ERA) vs. RHP #19 Drew Provence (5-3, 3.81 ERA)
Last time out...
The Washington Wild Things (42-51) scored five runs in the third inning to defeat the Joliet Slammers (35-57) by a final score of 7-2 Thursday night. Joliet starter Matt Sommo (2-6) took the loss but struck out a franchise record 11 batters in the contest. He went six innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. The Wild Things pushed across an unearned run in the first. With two outs and nobody on Gus Benusa reached on a Sommo error. He stole second and scored on a Mark Samuelson single. Joliet took the lead in the top of the second when Kyle Maunus smacked a two-run home run, his second home run of the series and 10th of the season. But Shain Stoner tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom half of the frame. The fifth inning was Joliet's undoing as the big blow was a Rick Devereaux three-run home run as part of the five-run explosion for Washington.
For Starters...
Jim Schult is looking for his first win in over a month tonight. The second year pro is coming off a rough outing against the River City Rascals on August 25. He went five and two thirds innings, giving up four runs on seven hits in a 6-1 loss. Schult has been a workhorse for Joliet, going at least five innings in all but two of his 14 starts since being moved to the rotation from the bullpen. One of those two starts where he did not go five innings was against Normal on July 7 in a 6-4 loss to the CornBelters. In that game he went four and two thirds innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits. Schult leads all Slammers pitchers with 90 strike outs, good for a tie for 10th in the Frontier League. Schult brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the New York Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season. Schult was named the Co-Division III National Player of the Year in 2011 at ECSU.
Mashing Maunus...
Kyle Maunus has hit four home runs over the past 10 games; he now has 10 homers on the season.
First two innings...
The Slammers are out-scoring opponents 97-87 in the first two innings. They are being out-scored 393-272 in all other innings.
Movin' on up!
Rookie left-hander Geoff Brown was signed by the Dodgers on Monday. He becomes the third Slammer signed by the Dodgers in recent weeks as he joins RHP Amalio Diaz and RHP Daniel Carela in LA's system. Brown is the seventh Slammer signed to affiliated ball in team history. He finished with a 3.67 ERA in 41.2 innings with 46 strike outs.
Mr. RBI...
Erik Lis leads the Slammers with 45 RBI on the season.
Team hitting slump...
The Slammers are only hitting .196 as a team over the past 10 games.
Losing streaks...
The Slammers are currently on a 14-game losing streak, the longest losing streak in franchise history. Joliet is also on a nine-game road losing streak, their longest ever on the road. They are currently a franchise worst 22 games under the .500 mark.
Walk this way...
Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 52 walks this season, good for seventh in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 38 times in 313 at bats.
Error indicator...
Joliet is 11-44 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not.
