Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 5-4, Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park. Darnell Sweeney scored from third on a wild pitch by Abel De Los Santos, who was attempting to intentionally walk Brock Stassi in the tenth inning, leading to the IronPigs' win.
Lehigh Valley (20-18) took an early lead in its first turn at-bat. Cedric Hunter hit Aaron Laffey's second pitch of the game over the right-field wall to give the IronPigs a 1-0 lead. The IronPigs continued their strong first inning with three hits in a row from Taylor Featherston, Andrew Knapp and Darin Ruf, who drove in Featherston to make the score 2-0. Laffey then walked Cam Perkins, still with no one out in the inning. Sweeney followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
The IronPigs added a fourth run in the fifth. Sweeney singled with one out and stole second. He scored a batter later on Will Venable's single to right to push the score to 4-0.
Syracuse (20-17) once again rallied from a deficit in its third time through the order. Alec Asher was outstanding for the IronPigs, holding a perfect game through the first six innings. The Chiefs, however, got to Asher in the seventh. Trea Turner ended the perfect game with a double off the right-field wall to start the inning. Brian Goodwin followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Turner scored his league-leading 32nd run on Matt den Dekker's groundout to the mound to cut the deficit to 4-1. The Chiefs then did something they had yet to accomplish this year. Matt Skole and Jason Martinson hit back-to-back home runs, tying the game at four. Skole's homer, a two-run shot, was his fourth of the season. Martinson followed with a solo blast to center field for his third long ball of the year.
The game stayed tied at four into extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth, De Los Santos walked Sweeney and Venable to start the frame. Angelys Nina successfully sacrificed the runners up a base to put them on second and third. De Los Santos set up to intentionally walk pinch hitter Brock Stassi. However, his first pitch sailed over Jhonatan Solano's head to the backstop. Sweeney scored on the wild pitch to win the game 5-4.
The Chiefs and IronPigs will play the finale of the three-game set Wednesday morning at 10:35 a.m. Paolo Espino is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Zach Eflin for Lehigh Valley.
