Toledo Beats up Buffalo's Bullpen for 7-1 Win

Buffalo Bisons News Release

For seven innings, Tuesday's game at Coca-Cola field lived up to the storyline coming in -- a battle between two of the International League's best starters.

But, unfortunately for the Bisons, the final act ended with the Mud Hens scoring six times off of Herd relievers, allowing Toledo to take the contest 7-1.

With the game tied 1-1, Bo Schultz came on to start the eighth and hit 97 miles per hour repeatedly on the radar gun but struggled with his control.

The 6-foot-3 righty issued a walk to Chad Huffman, then followed up the free pass with a wild pitch, two singles and a double. The three-spot effort was enough for Schultz, working his way through a rehab stint for the Blue Jays, to take the loss as the Mud Hens went up 4-1.

Bobby Korecky came on and got the Herd out of the frame but then ran into trouble of his own in the ninth.

Dixon Machado led off the inning with a double high off of the wall in left-center field. Toledo surrounded a strike out with three more singles and an RBI groundout to push their lead to 7-1.

Living up to his side of the initial billing, Wade LeBlanc continued his dominant 2016 campaign. The left-hander from Louisiana threw 6.1 innings, struck out six while giving up a lone, unearned run.

"There's some situations where you look for a strikeout, but for the most part you just look for early outs. You try to get outs on three pitches or less and try to keep the ball off the sweet spot," said LeBlanc of using his full barrage of pitches.

"Strikeouts happen if you're aggressive in the zone."

The 31-year-old has now gone three consecutive starts without allowing an earned run.

LeBlanc's counterpart, Thad Weber, matched his effort, surrenduring just one unearned run. The former Bison picked up his fifth win, spreading six hits around 7.1 innings of work while punching out a pair.

"He's had good year so far," noted manager Gary Allenson of Toledo's hurler.

"He did to the same thing to our hitters that Wade did to theirs. He kept everybody off balance."

Buffalo's only run came in the first inning on a booted ball by shortstop Dixon Machado off of the bat of Matt Dominguez, allowing Alexi Casilla, single and swiped two bags, to scamper home from third.

The Bisons, now 18-21, haven't scored more than four runs in their last 12 games.

BISONS NOTES:

Wade LeBlanc has struck out at least six batters in each of his last seven starts...With his two stolen bases in the first, Alexi Casilla became the first member of the Herd to steal multiple bases in a game this season...Dalton Pompey extended his hit streak to nine games...Casey Kotchman now leads all batters with the lowest strikeout rate in the International League, averaging more than 17 plate appearances per punch-out.
