Wieters Named Player of the Month

Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, MD - The Carolina League has named Frederick Keys catcher Matt Wieters the Topps Player of the Month for May. The eight managers in the league voted on the award. In May, Wieters hit .337, to go along with seven homeruns, and 18 RBI. The switch-hitter missed a couple games in May after bruising his thumb. The injury hardly slowed him down. Wieters played in nearly every other game in May, either behind the plate or as the team's designated hitter. He's currently leading the Carolina League in homeruns (12), and is second in batting average (.324).

The Baltimore Orioles selected Wieters with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft. The O's signed the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket just before the August 15th deadline. Wieters didn't play any baseball last summer. His only other professional experience came in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League.

Wieters and the Keys are currently on the road, playing a three-game set at Winston-Salem. First pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 7:00. The Keys will return to Frederick for a seven-game home stand on Monday.

The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and are the reigning Carolina League champions. For information regarding season ticket or group plans for the 2008 season contact the Keys at 301-815-9900.
