Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Frederick scored early and often in routing Winston-Salem 19-4 in laugher on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Keys tallied 18 hits and walked 11 times in handing the Warthogs its worst defeat of the season. Brandon Snyder led the offensive onslaught going 5-for-6 with 5 runs and 4 RBI. He was assisted by Matt Wieters who collected 4 hits and scored 4 times, while Miguel Abreu finished 3-for-6 with 4 RBI.

The Warthogs put a run on the board in the first inning against Brandon Erbe as John Shelby III tripled with one out and scored on a ground out by Brandon Allen. Frederick answered right back with a pair of runs in the second inning to take their first lead. After loading the bases with no outs against Matt Long, Billy Rowell hit into a double play to bring a run home. Next, Miguel Abreu lined a two-out RBI single to give the Keys a 2-1 lead.

Frederick extended its advantage in the third inning with four unearned runs keyed by an error by Warthogs shortstop Greg Paiml. For the second consecutive inning, the Keys loaded the bases with no outs. Long was able to retire two without allowing a run and almost got out of the jam unscathed, but a Billy Rowell grounder skipped past Paiml to bring two runs across. Abreu followed with a two-run double to extend the Keys advantage to 6-1.

Allen delivered an RBI double in the fourth inning for the Warthogs, but Abreu struck again with a run scoring single in the fifth for the Keys. Frederick broke the game wide open against the Warthogs bullpen with four runs against Matt Davis in the sixth inning and three more off Steve Spurgeon in the seventh to take a 14-4 lead. They Keys added four more against Israel Chirino in the eighth and one more in the ninth for an 19-4 advantage.

Erbe (5-5) was the beneficiary of the offensive attack as he tossed six innings and held the Warthogs to four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Long took the loss for Winston-Salem after giving up seven runs (three earned) on eight hits in five frames. The Warthogs right-hander has lost his last five starts.

The second of this three-game series will unfold on Saturday evening at Ernie Shore Field. Winston-Salem will hand the ball to RHP John Ely (2-6, 3.96), while Frederick will send RHP Tim Bascom (1-2, 4.60) to the mound. The first pitch is schedule for 6 p.m.
