Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, Va.- A night after lighting up the scoreboard in Lynchburg for a season-high 16 runs and 23 hits, the Potomac Nationals came home for an encore performance against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, torching their closest division rival for 12 runs and 18 hits in a 12-1 rout.

In a crucial series between the top two clubs in the Northern Division, it was first-place Potomac that came out firing on all cylinders.

Michael Martinez set the tone, leading off the first inning with a triple down the right field line. On the next pitch, Matt Rogelstad hit a ground ball to second with the infield back, scoring Martinez and giving the P-Nats the early 1-0 lead.

The Nationals would add another run in the second off of Wilmington starter and Stafford, Va., native Jason Godin (2-6). With runners at the corners and one out, Brian Peacock hit a ground ball to short that was booted by Chris McConnell scoring Edgardo Baez with a 2-0 lead.

After the Blue Rocks got a run back in the top of the third, the P-Nats pulled away in the bottom of the frame. Leonard Davis smacked a RBI double down the right field line and Baez followed with a two-run single. Dee Brown capped off the four-run inning with a RBI single of his own putting Potomac out in front 6-2.

The Nationals never looked back as the offense went on to score 10 unanswered runs the rest of the way including three in the fourth and seventh innings. For the second straight night, every batter in the line up recorded at least one hit as seven P-Nats notched multi-hit games. Baez and Francisco Plasencia each had three-hit performances on the night.

It was more than enough run support for Nationals starter Craig Stammen (2-2) who allowed just one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA to a league-best 2.08. The Ohio-native also earned his third quality start of the season and second in his last three outings.

With the win, Potomac's magic number to clinch the Northern Division is down to five with just ten games remaining the first half.

The P-Nats will have a chance to reduce their number even more tomorrow as they will play a doubleheader with the Rocks beginning at 5:35 p.m. Right-hander Adrian Alaniz (8-0) is expected to start game one opposite righty Ed Cegarra (2-0). Game two will feature another pair of right-handers as Jhonny Nunez (0-6) takes on Chris Nicoll (2-1). Both games are only slated to last seven innings. Saturday is also Disability Awareness Night presented by EP Global Communications and there will be fireworks after the game.
