Frederick Keys News Release
After two fruitless weeks, the Frederick Keys left nothing to chance Friday Night in Winston-Salem. 1B Brandon Snyder had a career night, going 5-for-6 with five runs scored and four run driven in to highlight a Keys 19-run onslaught as the Keys defeated Winston-Salem 19-4 in the opener of their three-game series. The 19 runs were a Carolina League high for 2008 and just two shy of a Keys franchise record. Frederick scored 21 runs on June 30, 1991 at Prince William.
The Keys trailed 1-0 in the second inning when the bats came alive. After a double play groundout by 3B Billy Rowell with the bases loaded and nobody out tied the game, 2B Miguel Abreu plated the leading run with a two-out single. It was just a beginning.
Of the 19 runs the Keys scored they were assisted by 11 Winston-Salem walks and seven unearned runs.
C Matt Wieters reached base on six consecutive occasions going 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Both Rowell and Abreu had three hits each, combining to drive home seven runs. SS Ryan McCarthy would walk three times going 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
The Keys had back-to-back runners reach in each of their last eight innings.
The series continues Saturday, June 7th at 6:00 p.m. at Ernie Shore Field. Frederick will return home Monday, June 9th for Kids Eat Free Monday presented by Giant Eagle. The Wilmington Blue Rocks will be in town for the 7:00 p.m. start.
