Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA - The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, took game one of a three game set with the Lynchburg Hillcats in front of more than 4,000 Friday night at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Hillcats (23-38) struck first, landing a two-run double from right fielder Jamie Romak in the top of the first. The hit scored both Angel Gonzalez and Jim Negrych - both touching home after reaching base with singles.
But that would be it for Lynchburg. The âCats got just three more hits all night and lost their lead in the 6th. Down 2-1, the Avalanche (28-33) got a lead-off single from Jimmy Van Ostrand. One-baggers from Tim Torres and Cesar Qunitero followed. That brought catcher Kevin Carkeek to the plate with just one RBI in a Salem uniform prior to first pitch. The first batter to face reliever Blair Johnson, Carkeek ripped a two-run single to give the Avs a 3-2 lead. Greg Buchanan followed that up with a sacrifice fly to score Quintero.
Salem's final run came in the 8th when Tim Torres crossed home on a Buchanan RBI single. That made the game 5-2.
Carkeek finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI. Buchanan was 1-for-3 with two driven in.
Douglas Arguello took the win for Salem with six innings of five-hit baseball. The lefty surrendered just two runs while striking out four.
Salem and Lynchburg meet again Saturday night at 6:07. Right-hander Corey Bass throws for the Avs against Hillcat hurler Jared Hughes.
