Worcester IceCats News Release

WORCESTER, MA- In front 8,847 at Worcester's home opener, the IceCats flattened the Springfield Falcons, 7-2. Rookie defenseman Dennis Wideman scored two goals and added three assists in his Wormtown debut.

The IceCats were twice answered by the Falcons, as the score was tied at two in the second period. Wideman then took over with back-to-back power play goals. The first was a blue line blast, while the second was unleashed from the top of the left wing faceoff circle. In addition to assisting on Jay McClement's first period goal, Peter Sejna added helpers on both Wideman goals. Sejna later went on to score his first of the season to make it 6-2 late in the third. Worcester's other goals were collected by Johnny Pohl (1 goal and 2 assists) and rookie Alexei Shkotov (1 goal and 1 assist).

The ‘Cats outgunned the Falcons by a jaw-dropping 38 shot margin, as Worcester finished with 54 shots to Springfield's 16. Curtis Sanford tended the Worcester's net and made 14 stops. After turning away 43 shots and allowing six goals, Jamie Storr was relieved late in the third by Brian Eklund. Eklund granted Worcester's fourth power play goal, the last marker of the night.

The 1-1 IceCats return to action next weekend, challenging Hartford, Springfield and Providence all on the road.
