Manitoba Moose News Release
Lee Goren scored his first three goals as a Moose, and Ryan Kesler registered a goal and two helper as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Rochester Americans 7-2 Friday night.
It didn't take Rochester long to score the first goal of the game. Only 19 seconds in, Jeff Heerema clipped Rochester's Paul Gaustad to put the Amerks on the powerplay.
15 seconds after that, Jason Botterill chipped in a Chris Taylor offering that eluded Wade Flaherty.
The Moose bounced back a couple of minutes later when Peter Sarno fed Jason King off the end boards. King redirected the past over Ryan Miller's left pad to tie the game 1-1.
Midway through the opening period, with Jimmy Roy in the box for holding the stick, Flaherty came up big with a save off Jason Pominville in close. Shortly thereafter, the Amerks poured on the pressure again as Botterill registered his second of the night from the same spot as his first marker.
After a whirlwind first period that resulted in Rocheter converting on two of six powerplay opportunities, Manitoba trailed Rochester 2-1 with a 14-6 shot count in favour of the hosts.
The Moose rebounded early in the second period on Lee Goren's first-ever goal as a Moose. Kirill Koltsov skated out in front and wristed a shot that was stopped by Miller but Goren scored on teh rebound to tie the game at 2-2.
Koltsov continued his onslaught of the Americans a minute and a half later on a shot from just inside the blueline that went right through Miller. Heerema and Baumgartner got the assists.
The Moose doubled their lead on a goal by Peter Sarno. Nolan fed Sarno, who rushed into the zone with King. Sarno attempted to pass it over to the Moose sniper but it ricocheted back to Sarno off the skate of the Amerks defenceman. Sarno then buried it behind Miller with a blast.
50 seconds after Sarno's goal, Goren ripped a shot past Miller. Ryan Kesler got the assist on Manitoba's fourth unanswered goal in the middle frame.
The blowout continued 1:49 later as Kesler potted his second of the season with just over two minutes to play in the second. Heerema got an assist on the give-and-go play.
Frustration set in for the Amerks on their home opener, as Jason Botterill dropped the gloves with Jimmy Roy. Roy got the best of Botterill as the latter was likely looking to spark his listless club.
After two periods, Rochester still had the edge in shots at 21-15 but the Moose were way ahead on the scoreboard, 6-2.
At the start of the third, Tom Askey came out to replace Miller in goal for Rochester.
Lee Goren completed the hat-trick midway through the third period to make it 7-2. Goren's powerplay marker was ripped from the high slot as Askey didn't have much of a chance on the blast. Heerema and Kesler got the assists.
Kent Huskins then engaged in some fisticuffs as he dropped the gloves with Chris Thorburn. Thorburn landed some early punches, but Huskins got a few shots in at the end of the bout.
Shots in the third period were 12-9 in favour of the Moose as they were relentless in their attack on Rochester right to the final buzzer.
