Bulldogs fall to Road Runners in OT

EDMONTON - The Hamilton Bulldogs opened the 2004-05 season with a tough 3-2 overtime loss to the Edmonton Road Runners in front of 16,001 fans in the inaugural AHL game in Edmonton at Rexall Place.

The game's opening goal happened to also be the first goal in Edmonton Road Runners history as Joe Cullen one-timed a Sean McAslan feed into the Bulldogs net at 9:22 of the first period.

The Bulldogs would rebound at 13:18 of the first, when Bulldogs rookie Andrei Kostitsyn took a wrist shot from just inside the face-off circle to the left of Road Runners goaltender Tyler Moss. Dan Jancevski picked up the lone assist on the play.

Before the first period was over Bulldogs forward Gavin Morgan won a face-off clean in the Road Runners end, drew the puck back to defenceman Philippe Plante who fired a puck low and past Moss. Time of the goal was 17:32.

Former Bulldogs forward and current Road Runners' forward J.J. Hunter evened the score 2-2 by posting the lone goal of the second period at 4:33. Earning assists on the play were Tony Salmelainen and Mike Bishai.

After a scoreless third period, the game went into overtime, and at the 1:30 mark Hunter would score the winner, his second of the night, as he lifted a backhand shot past the blocker of Dan Ellis.

In goal Dan Ellis made 32 saves for the Bulldogs and was named the game's third star. Moss stopped 21 shots for the Roadrunners and earned his victory of the season.
