Sioux City Explorers News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD -- The Sioux Falls Canaries had a special promotion on Tuesday night, saying Sioux Falls is a better place to live than Sioux City and they guaranteed a victory -- only somebody forgot to tell the Explorers as the X's beat the Birds 3-1 at the Birdcage.

The Canaries struck first on a solo HR by former Explorer Josh Patton in the 2nd inning but Sioux City answered with 2 runs in the 4th. Chris Grossman singled with one out off Lenny Bays. Anton French would fly out to left and then Chad Gabriel hit a drive to right that bounced under the mitt of Ben Van Iderstine and went all the way to the wall for a RBI triple. Gabriel would then score on a wild pitch by Bays to make it 2-1 X's.

The X's would add an insurance run in the 7th on a leadoff triple by French and he scored on a sac fly by Gabriel that was dropped by Van Iderstine in right. That made it 3-1 X's.

The Canaries would put a big threat on in the 9th. With 1 out, Will Smith would reach on an error and then Beau Torbert would replace him at first on a fielders choice. Patton would sinlge to bring the potential winning run to the plate in the form of Van Iderstine. The RF -- who leads the league in hits and had 2 earlier in the game -- would hit a long drive to right field and send French back to the wall but would have just enough room to make the catch and Reid would earn his 9th save of the year.

Paige Dumont was spectacular for the Explorers, going 6 innings in his 2nd ever start, only allowing the solo HR by Patton and just giving up 3 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 4, improving to 2-1 on the year. Ty Marotz would throw 2 innings of relief, only allowing 1 hit.

Gabriel would go 2-2 with a triple and 2 RBI. French would go 1-4 with a triple and a run scored. Nick McCoola went 2-3. Alex Llanos went 0-4 and had his hitting streak stop at 12 games.

So the X's get their first win of the year at the Birdcage and will look to take the series from the Birds in the rubber match. Dusty Bergman will get the call for the X's while the Canaries will counter with Pat Mahomes. Game time is 12:05 and can be heard live at kwsn.com or americanassociationbaseball.com and will be tape delayed on 1360 KSCJ and xsbaseball.com with first pitch at 7:05.
