St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 24, 2008) - The St. Paul Saints bats woke up in the ninth inning, but they fell a little short losing for the fourth consecutive time 4-3 to the Lincoln Saltdogs on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 7,243.
With the Saints trailing 4-1 in the ninth Brent Krause led off with a solo homer to left field, his sixth of the season. With one out Andrew Bennett hit a bloop single to right. With two outs Josh Womack tripled home Bennett to cut the deficit to one. Julius Thames, however, hit a check swing tapper back to the mound to finish off the game.
For the second straight night the Saints ran into a hot pitcher as Brian Campbell went 8.0 innings allowing one run on six hits while walking two and striking out seven. The Saints got to him in the first inning with two outs. Tim Brown doubled to left-center and Marcel Longmire followed with a walk. Kevin Sullivan then ripped a double off the wall in left plating Brown to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted until the third when Saints starter Luis Villarreal ran into control problems. The Saldogs sent nine men to the plate and Villarreal walked three in the inning. Anthony Contreras led off with a single to right and Skip Adams followed with a walk. Dustin Yount followed with an RBI double to tie the game at one. Eduardo Rios hit a two-run double to make it 3-1. Villarreal would walk two consecutive batters with two outs to load the bases, but got a ground out to end the inning. Villarreal went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking six and striking out two.
The Saltdogs got a run in the seventh off of reliever Dustin Bolton. Yount, who finished a homer shy of the cycle, hit a fly ball down the right field line that Brent Krause slid for, but a fan reached over and got his hands on it and Yount went for a triple. He scored on a sac fly from Rios.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (7-1, 2.79) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Ryan Trytten (3-2, 2.28). It is the State of "Hookey." The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on the Saints webcast at saintsbaseball.com courtesy of MSBN. The game will air on a tape delay at 6:00 p.m. on Relevant Radio 1330.
