West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps rode a dominant pitching performance to a 4-3 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps in front of a season-high 7,103 fans Thursday night at LMCU Ballpark.
Garrett Hill, Chris Mauloni, and Zack Hess combined to strike out 13 TinCaps hitters, holding Fort Wayne to an 0-for-9 finish with runners in scoring position in the 'Caps victory.
Daniel Cabrera pounded a double in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Parker Meadows and putting the Whitecaps in front by a score of 1-0. The 'Caps added an insurance run in the third on an RBI-single from Jake Holton to extend the lead to 2-0. Fort Wayne responded on the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Jonny Homza before a wild pitch tied the game at two in the sixth. Holton added his second RBI on a single in the seventh before Cabrera plated Wenceel Perez to deliver West Michigan the 4-2 lead. Fort Wayne plated a run in the eighth as Ethan Skender crossed the plate on a throwing error from Mauloni before Ripken Reyes was thrown out trying to advance from second to third after a bunt base hit to end the inning with the 'Caps leading 4-3. Hess walked TinCaps stolen base leader Rey Ilaraza to begin the ninth inning, but Hess retired the next three batters as Fort Wayne failed to capitalize as the 'Caps escaped with a 4-3 victory.
Mauloni (1-1) picked up his first win on the season, allowing just one run through 2.2 innings pitched with six strikeouts as Zack Hess secured his 11th save in the Whitecap winner. Fort Wayne reliever Luke Boyd (1-1) allowed a pair of runs through 1.1 innings of work in his first loss this season. The Whitecaps improve to 45-48 as the TinCaps fall to 43-50. Holton is 5-for-11 with two doubles while driving in three runs through his first three games with West Michigan.
