Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers jumped out to an 8-3 lead Thursday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium before the Cedar Rapids Kernels came from behind for a 9-8 walk-off win. Wander Javier's game-winning single completed the biggest comeback victory of the season for Cedar Rapids (52-41).
Wisconsin (43-49) opened the contest with a two-run first inning. Joe Gray Jr. delivered a run-scoring single that brought in Joey Wiemer, and Je'Von Ward's RBI force out allowed Zavier Warren to come home. In the home half, Cedar Rapids trimmed its early deficit to 2-1 when Javier grounded into a fielder's choice and drove in Edouard Julien.
Both teams tallied two runs during the second to push the difference to 4-3 Timber Rattlers. Felix Valerio hit a two-run home run to left field for Wisconsin, and Julien collected a two-run single for Cedar Rapids to plate Jeferson Morales and Michael Helman.
Another Timber Rattler homer secured a 6-3 third-inning lead. With two outs in the inning, LG Castillo belted a two-run blast that cleared the wall in left-center field.
Each side scored in the fourth inning. Wisconsin built an 8-3 advantage on Gray's RBI single and Ward's sacrifice fly. Alex Isola answered with an RBI single to bring in Julien and cut the gap to 8-4.
The Kernels climbed within 8-7 during the bottom of the sixth. Seth Gray lifted a three-run shot over the left-field wall and turned Thursday's tilt into a one-run game.
Cedar Rapids struck quickly in the ninth inning to turn its 8-7 deficit into a 9-8 victory. Julien led off with a single and stole second base. Yunior Severino followed by hitting an RBI double coupled with an error. Pinch-runner Daniel Ozoria was at third base for Javier who singled to right-center field and capped the comeback.
Ryan Shreve (4-2) was the winning pitcher for the Kernels. Wilton, Iowa native Evan Reifert received credit for his sixth hold with Wisconsin, but Cam Robinson (0-1) came in next and was charged for a blown save and a loss. The time of play was four hours and nine minutes within the longest Cedar Rapids contest of the 2021 season.
First pitch for Friday's game is set for 6:35 p.m., and the probable pitchers are Kernels right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-1, 7.20) and Timber Rattlers left-hander Nick Bennett (2-2, 4.70). Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will have the call on www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.
