West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

BELOIT, WI - Keith Stein and Adrian Casanova hit consecutive RBI sacrifice flies in the top of the eighth inning to give the Whitecaps the lead in a 4-3 win at Beloit. With the victory, the ‘Caps avoided a three game sweep at the hands of the Snappers and took the season series, 4-2. West Michigan rallied for three runs in the eighth off reliever Loek Van Mil. Only one of the runs was earned thanks to an error that started the inning when shortstop Estarlin De Los Santos was unable to handle a sharply hit ground ball off the bat of Joe Tucker. Kody Kaiser then doubled to the wall in right, followed by a walk to Jordan Newton. Van Mil then committed a balk to drive in Tucker and trim the Snappers lead to 4-2 and set up the sac flies.

Beloit forfeited its designated hitter in the fourth inning when third baseman Deibinson Romero caught a pop foul then fell into the Snappers dugout. Following a delay of several minutes, Romero was carried out of the dugout and into the clubhouse with a leg injury. De Los Santos was moved from the DH spot to shortstop as Chris Cates went from shortstop to third base. Starting pitcher David Bromberg therefore became the cleanup hitter.

Stein put the Whitecaps in front, 1-0 with a two out RBI single in the second inning. Whitecaps starting pitcher Mauricio Robles used three pick off plays to record three outs (two on caught stealing plays) in the first two innings. Robles faced the minimum nine batters through three innings, but in the fourth walked Cates with one out and walked Bromberg on four pitches with two out. Mark Dolenc then hit a three-run homer to give Beloit a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, relief pitcher Chris Anderson led off with an infield single. But pinch runner Ozzie Lewis was stranded at third when Greg Yersich struck out against Scott Green to end the game.
