Dragons sweep Kernels in DH, 4-3 and 8-1

July 18, 2008 - The Dayton Dragons swept the Cedar Rapids Kernels in both games of a doubleheader on Friday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium by the scores of 4-3 and 8-1.

In the first game, a Kernels rally fell a run short as Clay Fuller and Tyler Johnson both homered for the Kernels. Fuller went 2 for 4 with a double to go with his HR and Johnson was 2 for 3. Kernels starter Esmerlin Jimenez (4-4) allowed four runs on ten hits over 6.2 innings to take the loss. Denis Phipps was 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI and Keltavious Jones hit a two-run homer for Dayton. Luis Montano (10-6) picked up the win and Zach Stewart his third save.

In the nightcap, the Dragons roughed up Kernels starter Trevor Reckling (7-3) for seven runs (six earned) on seven hits over three innings. The Kernels scored their only run of the game on an RBI triple by Clay Fuller. Jerry Gonzalez had a double and Braulio Pardo a single as the Kernels were held to three hits in the game. Dayton reliever Tyler Rhoden (3-1) picked up the win as Zack Cozart was 1 for 4 with a 2 run HR.

The Kernels now welcome the South Bend Silver Hawks for a three game series starting at 7 pm on Saturday, July 19. It will be a Pat McGrath Chevyland Used Car Night as three lucky fans will win a used car from Pat McGrath. After the game, enjoy a spectacular fireworks show, presented by the Kernels and KWWL TV.
