Dayton Dragons News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa-Denis Phipps went 3 for 3 with two doubles and Luis Montano picked up his 10th win of the season as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-3 in game one of a doubleheader on Friday night. The win was the Dragons eighth in their last nine games and improved their second half record to 15-12.
Dayton took the lead in the first inning when Keltavious Jones led off the game with a home run to right field, his fifth long ball of the season. Two batters later, Brandon Waring, in his first at-bat since being activated from the disabled list, doubled off the fence in left-center field and Phipps followed with a double to right to make it 2-0.
Phipps led off the Dayton fourth with a double to left and with two outs, Angel Cabrera singled to right to bring in Phipps and make it 3-0.
Cedar Rapids' Clay Fuller homered leading off the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1. The Kernels scored again in the same inning against Montano to make it 3-2 on an RBI single by Julio Perez.
Dayton answered in the top of the fifth when Jones doubled to right, went to third on Zack Cozart's single to left, and scored when Neftali Soto hit into a double play to make it 4-2.
The Kernels came back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Tyler Johnson to make it 4-3. They had the tying run in scoring position later in the fifth and then in both the sixth and seventh against reliever Zach Stewart but could not score as the Dragons held on for the win.
Stewart tossed two scoreless innings, allowing three hits with no walks and two strikeouts for his third save.
The Dragons tied a club record with six doubles in the game.
The Dragons play at Clinton on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. (EDT). Daniel Guerrero (0-1, 6.46) will start for Dayton. The Dragons next home game is Wednesday against the Peoria Chiefs at Fifth Third Field.
