Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI - South Bend Silver Hawk starting pitcher Tom Layne allowed one run on five hits over seven innings in a 2-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Jeff Dietz retired the final six Rattler batters of the game for his fourth save.

Wisconsin (5-22 second half, 36-57 overall) grabbed the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Denny Almonte drove in Daniel Carroll with a one-out single. But, that was the only run Wisconsin had in them.

But, the Silver Hawks (17-11, 50-47) responded with a run in the top of the second. A sacrifice fly by Matt Oxendine drove in the tying run.

The score remained tied until the top of the seventh inning. Ramon Ramirez singled with one out for his third hit off Rattler starting pitcher Michael Pineda. Reliever Joe Kantakevich entered the game and gave up a single to Bill Musselman that moved Ramirez to second base. Oxendine was next and he sent a slow roller to short. The Rattlers got the force at second, but the throw to first was wild and Ramirez scored to give South Bend a 2-1 lead.

Layne worked around a pair of singles in the bottom of the seventh inning before turning the game over to Dietz, who struck out three in his two innings of work.

The Rattlers begin a seven-day, six-game road trip on Saturday night. Wisconsin takes on the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field with Brett Lorin (0-0, 0.00) as the scheduled Timber Rattler starting pitcher. The Snappers send Steven Hirschfeld (5-2, 2.82) to the mound. Game time is 7:00pm.
