Whitecaps Power Through Lugnuts

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps used extra-base hits and solid starting pitching to power past the Lansing Lugnuts by a score of 9-5 in front of 5,102 fans Tuesday night at LMCU Ballpark.

Bryant Packard and Colt Keith pounded solo home runs as Daniel Cabrera, Wenceel Perez, and Josh Crouch combined for five extra-base hits while driving in a pair of runs in the victory. Meanwhile, pitcher Carlos Guzman was solid, allowing one run through five innings of work with three punchouts.

Lansing scored first as Joshwan Wright lifted a sacrifice fly in the second inning, scoring Lawrence Butler and putting the Lugnuts on top 1-0. West Michigan responded with their biggest inning of the game, plating five runs in second - featuring an RBI-Triple from Cabrera - forging the 'Caps in front 5-1. Jake Holton crossed the plate on a fielding error in the fifth inning before a wild pitch extended the 'Caps lead to 7-1. In the sixth, Keith blasted his ninth home run of the season before Drew Swift roped an RBI-single in the seventh, 8-2. Packard added a solo homer in the seventh - his first since April 23rd - extending the lead to 9-2. Jared McDonald lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning before Euribiel Angeles plated Butler on a single. Still, the Lugnuts couldn't rally as Andrew Magno, and Elvis Alvarado combined for 1.2 shutout innings on three strikeouts to slam the door on the 9-5 victory.

Guzman (3-4) collects his third win as Lugnuts starter Osvaldo Berrios (1-6) suffers his sixth loss, allowing seven runs on ten hits through 4.2 innings of work. Magno has now thrown 19.1 shutout innings out of the pen, with his last run coming in his first appearance this season back on April 12th. In addition, Cabrera finished a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored and a run-scoring triple in the win. The Whitecaps improve to 24-28 as the Lugnuts fall to 19-33.
