
Gipson-Long Sharp as Kernels Win Series Opener in South Bend

South Bend, IN - Cedar Rapids righthander Sawyer Gipson-Long won his third straight start as the Kernels dispatched the South Bend Cubs 7-1 in their series opener on Tuesday night. Seth Gray had a two-hit game and drove in a pair while both Aaron Sabato and Kyler Fedko scored twice to lead CR to their fourth-straight win. The Kernels are now 34-18, good for their best mark of the season at 16 games over .500.
Gipson-Long tossed 6.0 innings of one-run ball, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out six. He threw 60 strikes on 81 pitches with 16 whiffs, working at a 78.3% first-pitch strike rate.
Fedko drew a walk to lead off the second then advanced to second on an error as Gray tapped a fielder's choice back to the mound. Two outs later, Wander Javier ripped an RBI single through the left side to plate Fedko.
Sabato and Christian Encarnacion-Strand opened the third with back-to-back free passes, with Fedko taking ball four to load the bases two batters later. Gray smoked a two-run single into left that drew a wild throw from South Bend's left fielder, putting Fedko and Gray at third and second. The two came home on a passed ball and an error respectively, making it 5-0 Kernels.
South Bend scored their lone run in the fourth on a solo home run. The Kernels responded on a Fedko RBI double blasted into right after Sabato walked and stole second. Pat Winkel teed off on a solo shot into right to open the sixth to give Cedar Rapids their decisive 7-1 lead.
Derek Molina struck out two over 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, then Ryan Shreve K'd a pair while posting a zero in the ninth.
Game two of the series is set for 7:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday in South Bend.
