Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps fell, 3-0, to the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate) at Parkview Field in 10 innings. Fort Wayne's pitching was dominant, but couldn't outduel Lake County on Tuesday evening in a game that was scoreless through nine.
With the score tied at 0-0 heading to the bottom of the ninth, the TinCaps (20-32) had only two hits to their ledger. Then, the offense started to show life. Angel Solarte smashed a line-drive to center field and Jarryd Dale followed it up with a looper to center of his own. After Matthew Acosta walked, the TinCaps had Solarte 90 feet away from the win but couldn't capitalize with two outs. This sent Fort Wayne to extra innings for the first time this season.
Lake County (27-24) carried its momentum from the field into the 10th with three runs. Captains catcher Michael Amditis, who was robbed of a hit by Basabe earlier, delivered a two-run single to right field. The visitors added another run on a wild pitch.
Fort Wayne wouldn't have been in the game if not for fantastic work on the mound. Righty Brandon Komar was tasked with starting for the second time this season. The Elkhorn, Wisconsin native entered the game on fire. Komar struck out the side in the first inning around a walk, including a curveball that induced a swing-and-miss from Alexfri Planez to end the frame. Captains starter Tanner Bibee called Komar's bet, however, by striking out the side in order in the bottom half.
Fort Wayne's starter continued to roll in the second. Komar stranded a leadoff single with a strikeout, a sacrifice bunt he fielded to the third-base side of the mound, and a highlight-reel catch from Olivier Basabe. Basabe, the left fielder, raced back to the wall with two outs and a runner on second after Amiditis lifted a booming fly ball toward the wall. Basabe placed his right hand on the padding and leaped to make the catch. The Venezuelan's snag robbed an extra-base hit and kept it scoreless going to the bottom of the second.
Komar kept rolling and ended his strong day with a season-high five innings, one hit allowed, no runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. Reliever Edwuin Bencomo picked up where Komar left off with three scoreless innings. Bencomo struck out four and allowed three hits, stranding a runner in each of his frames.
The TinCaps never led, however, because of equally masterful pitching from Lake County. Bibee managed 7 and 1/3 innings scoreless with only two hits allowed, no walks, and eight strikeouts. The two Fort Wayne batters that beat him were Jack Stronach - a single in the third - and Acosta - a single in the seventh, but neither made it to second base.
The TinCaps had an automatic runner on second base in the bottom of the 10th trailing by three runs. After a groundout advanced Lucas Dunn to third base, Basabe delivered a two-out hit to trim the lead down to 3-1. Stronach walked next, putting the tying run for Fort Wayne on base and the winning run at the plate. Solarte singled to score Basabe on a roller to right field and it was 3-2 in the 10th. That was all Fort Wayne could manage, though, falling just short.
