West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps tied a season-high with four home runs and enjoyed five solid innings from Dylan Smith as part of a 7-3 victory over the Beloit Sky Carp on Tuesday night at LMCU Ballpark.
The 'Caps, who've hit seven home runs in their past two games, have won three straight contests. Tuesday featured homers from Colt Keith, Ben Malgeri, Chris Meyers, and Wenceel Perez, while Smith (2-3), a Detroit Tigers Top-10 prospect, tossed five effective innings to earn the victory.
The Whitecaps set the tone early on Tuesday night when Keith, named Midwest League Player of the Week on Monday, launched his third home run of the season. The solo shot gave West Michigan a 1-0 lead. In the second, Ben Malgeri, who hit .400 during the series last week at Lansing, cranked his first homer as a Whitecap off the left-center field video board, extending the edge to 2-0. After the Sky Carp tallied a run in the third, Meyers put the game out of reach with a three-run homer to give West Michigan a 5-1 lead. Perez followed with a solo shot to give the 'Caps back-to-back home runs for the first time since July 7 of last season, when Andrew Navigato and Parker Meadows accomplished the feat. West Michigan enjoyed solid pitching and cruised to their third consecutive win from that point on.
Beloit starting pitcher, M.D. Johnson (1-4), the reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week, pitched through the four homers to pitch six innings in suffering his fourth loss of the season. The Whitecaps improve to 11-17 while the Sky Carp drops to 8-20. The victory gives the 'Caps a three-game winning streak, matching their longest of the season. Keith and Meyers reached base three times in the win.
