Clinton LumberKings News Release

Comstock Park, MI - The Clinton LumberKings could not follow up their strong performance in the series opener against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Instead, Clinton submitted one of its poorest showings in a one-sided 13-1 defeat.

Victor Sanchez was not his usual dominant self on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits. The right-hander took the defeat, his third straight losing decision dating back to May 30th.

The game was briefly tied at one run apiece after Martin Peguero delivered a two-out base knock to score Tyler Marlette in the fourth inning.

West Michigan scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to establish a 4-1 advantage. The flood gates broke open with a nine-run seventh inning for the Whitecaps.

A night after the LumberKings bullpen pitched four scoreless innings, Cameron Copping and Mark Bordonaro struggled mightily. After getting the first two outs of the seventh, Copping allowed four consecutive base hits, including a triple and two doubles. Bordonaro came on and struggled with his command, walking two and hitting two batters. All in all, 14 batters came to the plate scoring nine runs on seven hits.

The LumberKings offense was effectively shut down all night, managing just five hits in the game. Jeff Thompson earned the win with three scoreless innings in relief for the Whitecaps. Gaby Guerrero extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an infield single in the second inning.

Clinton and West Michigan play the rubber match on Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Rigoberto Garcia (0-0, 0.00) will debut for the LumberKings in the finale, and West Michigan counters with right-hander Edgar De La Rosa (5-3, 6.53). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT.
