MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (40-50, 13-7) scored two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, but allowed a two-run home run in the 10th to fall to the Burlington Bees (32-52, 6-13) by a score of 5-3 in the second game of a three-game series at Dow Diamond.
The Loons entered the ninth inning trailing Burlington 3-1. The Bees inserted their closer, Kurt Spomer, who had a 2.63 ERA entering Thursday, to finish the game, but Great Lakes found a way to push two runs across to tie the ballgame.
With runners on first and second, Malcolm Holland laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached because of an error, loading the bases. Jeremy Rathjen, who was 4-for-4 in the game with a double, singled to left field to drive in Miller for the first run of the frame.
"I was feeling good," Rathjen said. "I was just trying to see a good pitch to hit and put the barrel on it. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't, but today it worked out well for me."
With the bases still loaded, James Baldwin hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Brandon Dixon to tie the score at 3-3. Jose Capellan moved the runners left at first and second up to second and third with a groundout, but Robbie Garvey popped out to end the ninth.
"We played hard," Loons manager Razor Shines said. "We're going to play the game until it's over. That's just the way we're going to do it. I expect it. I demand it. That's just the way these guys play. It didn't really surprise me that we tied the game in the ninth. I expected us to win the game in the ninth, but it didn't happen."
Burlington cleanup hitter Wade Hinkle drew a two-out walk on a full count in the top of the 10th and Loons relief pitcher Owen Jones (1-1) paid for it as he gave up a 380-foot home run down the right field line to Anthony Bemboom, giving the Bees the lead.
Cam Bedrosian (2-2) worked a scoreless 10th inning to finish the game and get the win for Burlington. Bedrosian had two strikeouts and no walks.
Reid Scoggins, the Los Angeles Angels No. 15 prospect, made the start for the Bees and pitched three solid innings, holding Great Lakes scoreless, with one hit over the three frames. He struck out five and walked one.
Burlington scored the first three runs of the ballgame in the top of the fifth inning with a bases-clearing double from two-hitter Garrett Cannizaro, scoring Chevy Clarke, Wendell Soto and Sherman Johnson.
Chris Anderson, the Los Angeles Dodgers' 2013 first round draft pick, started and threw 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to take the loss. Anderson struck out three and walked one.
"I felt great today," Anderson said. "I thought it was one of those days where I had my good stuff, but unfortunately I wasn't able to finish out that fifth inning. You never want to end your outing like that, but that's what happened."
Great Lakes picked up good relief outings from Arismendy Ozoria and Scott Griggs before extra innings. Ozoria entered for Anderson in the fifth and was credited with one of Burlington's runs in that frame. He gave up two hits and struck out two, while walking two. Griggs pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three.
The Bees got five innings of good relief from Brandon Love, who held the Loons scoreless until the eighth. Love gave up four hits while striking out five and walking one.
Great Lakes leadoff hitter Robbie Garvey hit a 345-foot solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning after striking out in his first three at-bats. Garvey's homer cut the Burlington lead to 3-1.
The Loons will wrap up their series against the Bees on Friday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Dodgers 2013 second-round draft pick Tom Windle (0-0, 2.08 ERA) is the projected starter for Great Lakes. Burlington is expected to start Pat Lowery (3-5, 4.89), a 6-foot-5, 195-pound righty. There is a postgame Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning, and it is also Hawaiian Luau Night at Dow Diamond.
The Great Lakes Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
