Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - A seven-run eighth inning for the Peoria Chiefs (10-10, 48-39) helped them to a 10-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (4-16, 36-53) on Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
With the Chiefs up 3-2 in a tight game, Wil Browning came on and stranded a runner on second with a strikeout to end the seventh frame. but things fell apart for Browning and the Lugs in the eighth, due to some wild pitching and a couple of errors.
The first five batters for Peoria all eventually came in to score to start the inning thanks to an infield single, an error on Kevin Patterson at first - his second of the night - and then three straight walks followed. Two walks came with the bases loaded and another run scored on a fielder's choice before Patrick Wisdom blew things open with a two-run triple to the gap in left-center, capping the scoring at 10-2.
Browning allowed six runs in just two-third of an inning out of the bullpen, but because of a pair of errors in the inning - one of which was committed by Browning himself - only one of the runs was earned.
However, it was Taylor Cole (Loss, 4-8) who took the loss for Lansing. In 4.2 innings in the start, Cole surrendered three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits allowed to Peoria. The 23-year old struck out four while issuing a pair of walks.
In total, Lansing pitchers issued six walks, tossed five wild pitches, and the three errors by the defense accounted for seven unearned runs.
Chiefs starter Joe Cuda (Win, 5-4) stymied the Lugnuts bats for six innings, allowing just two runs - both earned - on four Lansing hits. Cuda struck out five and walked one.
In the loss, Emilio Guerrero slugged his fifth home run of the season - a solo blast in the sixth innings - and Dwight Smith, Jr. finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles and an RBI.
The series finale will be played Friday night with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. on a Freebie Friday where Seniors Eat Free. Ben White (4-6, 3.91) will get the start for the Lugnuts while the Chiefs will give the ball to right-hander Chris Perry, who will make his debut.
