
Chiefs Bounce Back and Blowout Lugnuts Thursday

Lansing, MI- The Peoria Chiefs bounced back from being shutout on Wednesday night to score 10 runs Thursday, including seven in the eighth inning, for a 10-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts. The win moves the Chiefs back to .500 in the second half at 10-10 and 48-39 overall.
After getting just two hits in the shutout Wednesday night, the Chiefs got a two-out double from Jeremy Schaffer in the top of the first but could not score. Peoria loaded the bases with one out on three hits in the second but Gerwuins Velazco hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Chiefs finally broke through against Taylor Cole in the third inning. CJ McElroy drew a one-out walk and scored on Schaffer's second double of the game. Schaffer moved to third on a groundout but was stranded as Cole got a strikeout to end the inning.
Lansing responded immediately against Joe Cuda in the bottom of the inning. Carlos Ramirez led off with a double and with one out moved to third on a wild pitch. Dalton Pompey walked and Emilio Guerrero tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Chiefs went back on top in the fourth inning thanks to a Lansing error. Breyvic Valera and Charlie Tilson reached on singles before a fielders' choice and strikeout left two on with two out. Nick Martini's grounder to first was booted by Kevin Patterson as Tilson scored to put the Chiefs on top 3-1.
Peoria added a run in the fifth as Schaffer walked and later scored on a wild pitch. Lansing got back to within a run in the sixth as Guerrero homered off Cuda for a 3-2 Chiefs lead. The Lugnuts left a runner at first in the sixth and then put two on against Sam Tuivailala in the seventh. The Chiefs reliever struck out Kellen Sweeney to end the threat with the Chiefs still on top by one.
The Chiefs broke the game wide open in the eighth with a lot of help from the Lugnuts. Valera began the inning with an infield single and Tilson reached on another error by Patterson. Ildemaro Vargas walked to load the bases and Velazco walked to score Valera. Wil Browning walked a third straight batter as Martini took the free pass to score Tilson for a 5-2 lead. After a strikeout, Schaffer reached on an error by the Lugnuts pitcher and Vargas scored for a 6-2 lead. Jordan Walton drove home Velazco with a groundout and Patrick Wisdom tripled home two more for a 9-2 Chiefs advantage. Wisdom scored on a wild pitch before Vargas singled for the second time in the inning. Justin Jackson finally got out of the inning with a groundout and Lansing plated a run in the eighth for the 10-3 final.
Cuda (5-4) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out five, walked one and threw a wild pitch. Tuivailala allowed one hit and walked one while striking out two in one inning. Joe Donofrio allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts in his inning of work. Michael Aldrete struck out three in a scoreless ninth inning.
