Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - A five-run second inning helped the Lansing Lugnuts (20-32, 52-69) to a 6-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (24-25, 57-62) in the series-opener from Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday night.
The Lugs sent all nine players to the dish in the second inning, stroking six singles off of West Michigan starter Jorge De La Rosa (Loss, 6-6).
Singles from Jordan Leyland, Chris Hawkins and Emilio Guerrero loaded the bases before a broken-bat, two-run single by Kellen Sweeney opened the scoring. Dwight Smith, Jr. added an infield RBI single and was followed by a run-scoring groundout by Dalton Pompey. Christian Lopes then lined a single to right, scoring Smith to cap the five-run frame.
Guerrero finished 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a single, double and triple in order - just a home run shy of the cycle. Sweeney finished the night 2-for-4 with three runs driven in, adding an RBI single in the sixth inning.
The scoring was more than enough for Lansing starter Ben White (Win, 8-6).
White, playing in front of a number of friends and family, pitched six strong innings, not allowing his first hit until a Connor Harrell single in the bottom of the fifth inning. He allowed two unearned runs in the start, surrendering just three hits to the Whitecaps. The right-hander struck out five while issuing two free-passes.
The only runs for the Whitecaps came via an error in the bottom of the fifth, allowing for the two unearned runs.
Javier Avendano, Ian Kadish and Arik Sikula pitched three scoreless innings in relief of White to seal the victory.
Meanwhile, De La Rosa lasted five innings for the Whitecaps, allowing 10 total hits. All the five runs against him came in the second inning. The 22-year old struck out three and did not issue a single walk.
The three-game set continues Thursday night with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch from Fifth Third Ballpark. Lansing will hand the ball to southpaw Daniel Norris (1-7, 4.84) in opposition of West Michigan right-hander Jake Thompson (2-3, 3.50).
