Peoria Chiefs News Release
Grand Chute, WI- The Peoria Chiefs got a two-run home run from Bruce Caldwell in the top of the 11th inning to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-1 Wednesday night to open a three-game series. The win moves the Chiefs to 26-25 in the second half, one game ahead of Clinton in the wild card race with 19 games left.
Chiefs starter Chris Perry worked out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning. He walked Tyrone Taylor and Michael Reed to start the inning before both runners moved up on a Michael Garza sacrifice bunt. Victor Roache popped up the first pitch in foul territory and Max Walla lined out to end the threat.
The Chiefs jumped on Preston Gainey in the top of the second as Jeremy Schaffer hit a towering home run down the left-field line to start the inning. The blast, his 11th of the season, put the Chiefs on top 1-0.
Peoria loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning on a walk and consecutive infield singles. However, Gainey got Trevor Martin to bounce into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to keep the score 1-0.
Wisconsin tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Orlando Arcia clubbed a solo home run with one out. The Chiefs put two on base in the seventh inning but again hit into a double play to keep the game tied as both teams went to the bullpen.
Neither team got a runner past first base in the eighth, ninth or 10th innings. In the 11th inning Charlie Tilson led off with a bunt single against Ryan Gibbard. With a full count and Tilson on the move, Caldwell launched a two-run home run into the Chiefs bullpen in straight-away center field. The home run was the first with the Chiefs for Caldwell and put Peoria on top 3-1.
Perry took a no-decision after allowing just one run on the Arcia home run. He struck out two, walked two and gave up eight hits over 6 2/3 innings. Thomas Lee struck out two and allowed one hit in 2 1/3 shutout innings. Llorens (3-2) earned the win with two perfect innings and four strikeouts.
