Captains Beat South Bend 10-9 with a Walk-Off in Extras

(Eastlake, OH) - Joe Sever laced a double to the gap in left center field and two runs scored as the Captains (26-25) defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-21) by a final of 10-9 in extra innings. The Captains loaded the bases in the tenth and Sever won the game. It was the second consecutive game that the Captains won on a walk-off hit. The Captains also won their first extra inning game and improve to 1-7 on the season in extra frames.

Lake County scored four runs in the first inning and took the early lead. In the first, the Captains batted around and used five hits and took advantage of two South Bend errors to score four runs. In the inning, Richard Stock, Zack MacPhee and Nick Hamilton had RBI's.

In the top of the second inning, South Bend sent eight men to the plate and scored four times to tie the ballgame. The Hawks used three hits, and two walks to score four runs themselves. The Captains committed one error to help the Hawks rally.

South Bend took the lead in the top half of the third inning by scoring three runs. Mike Lang tripled and after back-to-back walks with two outs, Lang scored. Breland Almadova hit a fly ball to left field and it turned into a three base error and that cleared the bases and the Silver Hawks led 7-4.

It was the Captains turn to tie the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jeremy Lucas and Joe Sever each had RBI singles and then Richard Stock tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. The game was evened at 7-7 headed to the fifth.

The Hawks took the lead, in the fifth inning when Pedro Ruiz singled home Alex Glenn who doubled and the score was 8-7. Lake County tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth inning when Jeremy Lucas walked and eventually came around to score on a throwing error to even the game once again. South Bend took the lead in the top of the tenth inning when Breland Almadova reached on an error and scored on a triple by Socrates Brito to take the 9-8 lead.

RHP Felix Sterling (3-4) started the game for Lake County and did not get a decision. Sterling pitched two and two thirds innings and allowed seven runs, three were earned, on four hits along with seven walks. Sterling struck out four. Luis Dejesus pitched three and one third inning and allowed four hits, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts. Anderson Polanco pitched two innings of scoreless baseball and walked two while striking out three. Grant Sides earned the win after pitching the final two innings and allowing just one unearned run on one hit. Sides struck out four.

RHP Blake Perry (7-5) got the ball for South Bend and did not get a decision. Perry twirled five innings and allowed eleven hits, seven runs and five were earned. Perry walked two and fanned three. South Bend used five relief pitchers in the ballgame and pen allowed three runs and two were earned on three hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts. The loss went to Enrique Garcia (7-1) who gave up the winning run.

The Captains will be back in action on Thursday. South Bend will be in Eastlake for game two of a three game series. The Captains will start LHP Ryan Merritt (6-9, 4.86) and South Bend will counter with RHP Braden Shipley (0-0, 0.00). First Pitch will be at 7:00 PM from Classic Park.

Thursday is Thirsty Thursday, presented by ESPN 850 WKNR, featuring a 25-cent beer Happy Hour for one hour before game time and half-price draft beer and fountain soda until 9 PM. A wing and pizza buffet will also be available outside the Corona Castaways Bar, featuring Happy Moose Bar and Grill wing sauces and pizza from Cleveland Pizza Company.

A Sharknado will hit Eastlake on Thursday and the Captains are forecasting that sharks will be scooped up out of the waters of Lake Erie and will be falling on fans from the roof top at Classic Park. The Captains are preparing for a shiver of sharks in the concourse and on the field during the game. The sharks, which may or may not be humans dressed in shark costumes, will be involved in on-field promos throughout the night.

Fans can protect themselves form the sharks and commemorate the night by getting temporary shark tattoos made with shark repellent and can extinguish their appetites with gummy shark treats, both of which will be distributed to everyone in attendance.

The Cleveland Aquarium will be have shark artifacts on display that will include examples of shark jaws, shark teeth and much more that kids can be hands on with. Captain Neo and the Aquariums shark mascot will be present as well.

Fans age 21 and older can quench their thirst via specials that the Captains will be offering on Landshark Lager from the Margarita Brewing Company.
