Burlington Bees News Release

Matt Scioscia hit a one-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give the Burlington Bees a 5-4 win over the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night.

The Bees (47-69, 21-30) showed how important it is so start and finish a game on Wednesday, scoring four runs in the first and one in the ninth to earn the victory. In fact, the Bees did not have a hit in any of the middle seven innings.

Michael Hamann (1-2) walked Exicardo Cayones to start the ninth. Hamann attempted to pick off Cayones at first and threw the ball away, allowing Cayones to get all the way to third. Hamann intentionally walked Wade Hinkle and Julio Concepcion to load the bases with no outs. Zach Wright hit a slow ground ball to second, and Brad Zapenas threw home for the first out of inning. The next batter was Matt Scioscia, who went after the first pitch he saw and belted a one-hopper off the right field wall, scoring Hinkle and giving the Bees their second walk-off win of the year.

Scioscia's single in the ninth was the first hit the Bees had since his single brought home a run in the first. Burlington went after Starling Peralta early, scoring four runs on four hits and a walk. Sherman Johnson walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a single by Angel Rosa. Johnson scored from second on a single by Cayones. Rosa scored on a wild pitch, while Hinkle belted a single, which scored Cayones. Concepcion hit a ground ball to third, which was booted by Jeimer Candelario, putting two men on with no outs for Wright. Wright grounded into a double play, but Scioscia followed with a single to score Hinkle.

The Cougars (48-68, 18-32) came crawling back to tie the game. Pat Lowery surrendered a three-run home run to Reggie Golden in the fourth and Joey Krehbiel gave up a home run to Candelario in the eighth. It was only the second run that Krehbiel had allowed since July 12, and the first home run allowed by Krehbiel since June 25.

Kurt Spomer (4-3) tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth win of the season.

Burlington has now won two games in a row and will look to continue the winning streak on Thursday when Tyler DeLoach makes his first start since July 30th. Kane County will send the Chicago Cubs 4th round pick, Tyler Skulina, to the hill at 6:30 p.m.
