Dragons and Vectren Present 2013 "Community All-Stars"
August 14, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Vectren Corporation and the Dayton Dragons will host West Carrollton Police Officer Nathan Biggs during the unique "Community All-Stars" program on Thursday, August 15th, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Great Lakes Loons at Fifth Third Field.
The Dayton community is a great place to live, work and play. But what makes Dayton truly great are the people that call Dayton home. We have great people and great organizations in our community that do incredible things each and every day. Throughout the season, the Dragons and Vectren will honor 35 "All-Stars"-anyone from firefighters to first responders, non-profit organizations to Good Samaritans-and their families with a VIP treatment at a Dragons game in recognition of their service.
NATHAN'S STORY
Officer Nathan Biggs had just reported for duty at the West Carrollton Police Station on November 2, 2012 when he heard the Fire Department get dispatched to a house fire. He decided to offer assistance.
He and Officer Scott Lawson were the first on the scene. They realized quickly after arriving that the house was fully engulfed in smoke and flames. A neighbor let Officer Biggs know the resident, a woman, was still inside and appeared to be unconscious by the upstairs window.
It was too smoky for the officers to enter the house through the front of back doors so Officer Biggs leaned a ladder up to the house in an effort to reach the resident. The ladder did not reach all the way but Officer Biggs was able to stand on an overhang and hold the woman partially out of the upstairs window so she could breathe.
Once firefighters arrived, they were able to help Officer Biggs carry the woman down the ladder to the safety of medics on scene. She was rushed to the hospital and was okay.
"It's part of the job," Officer Biggs explained. "Once I found out she had lived I was very happy I was able to assist in that. It makes you feel good, that's why you do this job."
For answering the call of duty, Officer Nathan Biggs has been selected as a Dragons Community All-Star. The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.
The Dragons Community All-Stars Program is made possible by the generous support of Vectren. For more information on the program or to read about the All-Stars we have honored in 2013, visit daytondragons.com.
