Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Zach Vincej hit a home run and drove in two runs while three Dayton pitchers combined to scatter eight hits as the Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 3-1 on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons improved to 28-24 in the second half and reduced their deficit behind first place Great Lakes to three and one-half games. The Dragons remained two games behind Bowling Green, who won in extra innings Wednesday, in the race for the East Division wildcard spot. There are 18 games remaining to be played.

Great Lakes scored the game's first run before an out was recorded in the top of the first inning, getting back-to-back doubles to start the game from Brandon Trinkwon and Leo Rodriguez.

The Dragons tied the game in the fifth on a solo home run by Vincej, his second homer of the year.

The Dragons picked up the lead in the sixth. Jesse Winker singled to right to start the inning and went to third on a double to right by Seth Mejias-Brean. After Tanner Rahier struck out, Jeff Gelalich hit a looping fly ball down the left field line that appeared to bounce in fair territory and land in the seats for a ground rule double that would have brought in two runs. But the ball was called foul by plate umpire Mike Provine, prompting an argument and eventual ejection of Dragons manager Jose Nieves. It was the first time this season that Nieves was ejected. Gelalich eventually worked a walk to load the bases and Daniel Pigott walked to force in a run and give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. Vincej delivered a sacrifice fly to right to bring in another run and make it a 3-1 game.

Dragons starting pitcher Ismael Guillon (5-7) worked six strong innings, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts to earn the win. It was one of Guillon's finest pitching performances of the season as he retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced.

Wandy Peralta and Alejandro Chacin combined to work the final three innings for the Dragons without surrendering a run. In the ninth, Chacin got the first two outs before issuing a walk on a 3-2 pitch. He then struck out pinch hitter Kevin Taylor, but Taylor reached on a third strike wild pitch. Chacin threw another wild pitch to advance both runners and put the tying run in scoring position, but he struck out Brandon Trinkwon to end the game.

The Dragons finished with seven hits. Winker and Joe Hudson each had two.

The Dragons host the Loons on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the second game of the series. Nick Travieso (6-3, 5.19) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Jonathan Martinez (2-2, 2.82). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
