Last week, the Wheeling Nailers traveled to the South Division for the final time in the 2013-14 season, leaving a lasting impression, as they won two of three games against the Greenville Road Warriors and Gwinnett Gladiators. Wheeling's special teams were a major reason for the success, as the penalty kill denied 11 of 12 opposition power plays, while also scoring three shorthanded goals. The Nailers also received stellar goaltending from Mike Condon, who made 96 saves on 101 shots, as the team posted a 2-1-0 record.

On Friday night, Max MacKay was in the mood to celebrate, as he scored twice in the first period on his 23rd birthday. MacKay joined Jacob Lagace as the two Nailers who have scored birthday goals in 2013-14. Greenville's Marc-Olivier Vallerand countered with two goals of his own, sending the game into the second intermission deadlocked at two. In the third period, Wheeling's special teams took over, as Chaz Johnson and Cody Sylvester netted shorthanded goals, while Lagace connected on the power play. Mike Condon's 37 saves got the upper hand on Jeff Malcolm's 30 for the Road Warriors. On Saturday night, Greenville changed its hand in goal, and Jason Missiaen rewarded his club, blanking the Nailers on 40 shots. Condon played well again, making 38 saves, but suffered the tough luck loss. On Monday afternoon, Condon saved his best for last, as the Gwinnett Gladiators were unable to break through the Wheeling backstop on 31 shots. Sylvester was responsible for both goals for the Nailers, as he scored shorthanded in the second, before clinching the win with an empty netter in the third. Wheeling won its season series with Greenville (2-1) for the third year in a row, while splitting with Gwinnett (1-1).

This Week

Fri. 1/24 WHEELING NAILERS @ Toledo Walleye, 7:15

Sat. 1/25 WHEELING NAILERS @ Cincinnati Cyclones, 7:35

Sun. 1/26 Cincinnati Cyclones @ WHEELING NAILERS, 3:00

This week, the Wheeling Nailers will start a stretch of six straight games against the North Division, with the two teams from Ohio filling the first three slots. On Friday night, the Nailers will return to Huntington Center, looking to avenge a pair of losses to the Walleye on January 11th and 12th. Wheeling will also be in search of its first goal of the season in Toledo, after being blanked in both prior visits. On Saturday and Sunday, the Nailers will collide with the Cincinnati Cyclones in a home-and-home series. Wheeling and Cincinnati have split the first six games of their 12-game season series, with both sides winning twice on enemy ice. The Nailers and Cyclones enter the week separated by eight points in the Eastern Conference Standings, and in an incredibly tight race, there are six teams between them (Florida, Evansville, Reading, Orlando, Kalamazoo, Greenville).
