Wheat Kings Win Third Straight
December 2, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Swift Current, SK. - The Brandon Wheat Kings capped off a successful week Saturday night with a 5-2 victory over the Broncos in Swift Current.
Linden McCorrister scored three times as the Wheat Kings struck for three goals in a span of 1:38 in the third period to run their win streak to three games.
With the victory, their second in Swift Current in four days, the Wheat Kings improved to 13-7-3-3.
Swift Current meanwhile slipped to 4-21-1-1.
With the game tied at two midway through the third period, McCorrister scored what proved to be the game winner - on the powerplay - with 7:45 remaining in regulation time.
Forty-six seconds later rookie Ridly Greig notched his sixth of the season before McCorrister completed the hat trick less than a minute later.
Besides the two minute scoring spree in the third, special teams were a key in this one.
The Wheat Kings, who also got a goal from captain Stelio Mattheos, went 3 for 7 with the man advantage while killing off both of Swift Current's powerplays.
"I thought the third was our best period...and I thought our powerplay responded the right way and we were able to get on the scoresheet," Brandon coach David Anning told Perry Bergson of the Brandon Sun following the game. "We got back to work and played with more structure. I thought we did a good job helping our back end, which allowed us to exit the zone a lot faster, and it allowed us to get the puck moving offensively. And we got some timely goals."
"We had guys step up," Anning went on to say. "We had some good performances from a few guys, obviously Linden (McCorrister) with a hat trick but overall we had some guys play well."
Brandon outshot Swift Current 35-33. Jiri Patera made 31 saves to secure the win.
The Wheat Kings will now return home to play back to back games at Westoba Place this week.
Brandon will host Medicine Hat on "2 for Tuesday" before taking on the league leading Prince Albert Raiders on Friday.
Fans purchasing a ticket to the game against the Tigers will receive a second one "free". As well, the Keystone Centre / Center Plate will be offering a number of special concessions. Tickets to both games this week go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
