Wheat Kings Make It 2 for 2

Regina, SK. - The Brandon Wheat Kings completed a sweep of their weekend home and home series with the Regina Pats Saturday night.

Kale Clague, who will be one of several Wheat Kings helping with Sunday's WagaTail Walkathon in support of the Brandon Humane Society, scored twice and set up another as the Wheat Kings downed the hometown Pats 8-3.

After jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead, the Pats pulled to within a goal in the second to make it 4-3 Brandon through forty minutes.

The third period was all Wheat Kings as the visiting team, which opened the weekend with a 6-2 win on Friday night, scored four unanswered goals to blow the game wide open.

"I thought we were ready to play, which you're looking for with a young team on the road playing on back-to-back nights," Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show, "Because we were ready to play, I thought we got off to a good start and were in the game."

Mark Matsuba added a goal and three points for the winners while Nolan Patrick and Ivan Provorov, who leaves Sunday for Philadelphia's National Hockey League Training Camp added three assists each.

Tyler Coulter, Stelio Mattheos, Braylon Shmyr, Tanner Kaspick and Connor Gutenberg, with his third goal in two games this weekend, rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings.

Josh Dechaine and Logan Thompson combined to make thirteen saves in the Brandon net.

The Wheat Kings will close out their pre-season with a home-and-home against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday in Brandon and Saturday back in Moose Jaw. Brandon will then open up the regular season on Friday, September 25th against Swift Current.

Sunday's WagaTail Walkathon will be held from 9-11am at Kin Park, located on the corner of Aberdeen and 1st Street. Members of the Wheat Kings will be joining the festivities at 10am.
