Brandon, MB. - When the Brandon Wheat Kings take to the ice Friday night in a game against the visiting Swift Current Broncos, 20-year old defenceman Macoy Erkamps will be wearing the "C" on his jersey.
The Western Hockey League club announced Thursday afternoon that the Delta, B.C. native, who is in his fifth and final WHL season, will become the 58th Captain in franchise history.
Acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in September 2014, Erkamps has appeared in 276 career games in the WHL. As a Wheat King in 2014-15, the 6' 198 lb blueliner scored three goals and 31 points in 68 games.
Since joining the Hurricanes in 2011, he has scored 126 points, including twenty goals while accumulating 280 minutes in penalties.
Through seven games this season, Erkamps has three goals and 9 points.
Back for his second season as a full time alternate will be 20-year old Colton Waltz of Vermilion, Alberta.
Brandon's top pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Waltz is in his fourth full season with the Wheat Kings, having joined the club for the 2012-13 campaign.
Waltz has two goals and five points in 7 games this season and during his WHL career, he has 64 points, including twelve goals in 214 games.
Meanwhile the other two alternates will be shared by three players including overage center Tim McGauley, who will be joined by John Quenneville and Nolan Patrick.
The Eastern Conference Player of the Year in 2014-15, McGauley finished third in league scoring last season with 42 goals and 105 points. In 226 career games, the Wilcox, Saskatchewan product has scored 81 goals and 211 points.
A first round draft choice of the New Jersey Devils in 2014, Quenneville enters Friday's game with four goals and 11 points in just five games this season. In 170 career games as a Wheat King, the Edmonton native has scored 54 goals and 135 points.
Patrick meanwhile was the WHL's Rookie of the Year in 2014-15 after scoring 30 goals and 56 points in 55 games last season. In seven games to start this season, the 17-year old Winnipegger has eleven points, including four goals.
Brandon enters Friday's game tied for second place with Moose Jaw in the WHL's Eastern Division with a record of 4-1-0-2. Following the game, the Wheat Kings will hit the road for an 8-game road trip, beginning Saturday night in Saskatoon against the Blades.
