Whales not big enough to swim in 'The Pond'

Mississauga, ON - The Steelheads returned to the Hershey Centre tonight, following a tough loss against a divisional rival in the Barrie Colts. Tonight, they hoped to regain some of the ground they lost last night as they attempt to avenge the loss to the Plymouth Whalers on October 24. Members of Peel Regional Police were in attendance for the Steelheads annual Toys for Tots game.

The Steelheads shook the lines up a bit tonight, most notably moving Josh Burnside back to left wing to play alongside Mikey McLeod and Nathan Bastian. Uncharacteristically, the Trout fell behind in shots early on in this one. The new line of Burnside, McLeod and Bastian came out hot, creating a scoring chance each time they took the ice. Plymouth's Matt Mistele opened the scoring with a pair of goals, to give the Whalers the lead. The Fish were determined to stay competitive and were rewarded for their efforts. Jimmy Lodge cut into Plymouth's lead in the final minute of the first, finishing off a pass from Bryson Cianfrone. Mississauga poured on the shots as the period transpired, and took a 15-10 lead in shots into the intermission.

The Steelheads headed to the power play just three minutes into the second period, and got right to work. Wasting little time, the Trout pressured Alex Nedeljkovic, and Nathan Bastian finished off a feed from Everett Clark for his seventh of the season, knotting the score at 2-2. Sonny Milano reinstated the Whalers lead, as the teams continued to trade offensive chances. Minutes later, while - 4-on-4 - Devlin moved up the wing with a burst of speed, broke into the offensive zone and made his way around Plymouth's net. He centered a pass for Cianfrone, but Nedeljkovic flashed the leather to make the save. The Steelheads sustained pressure on the Whalers; added 17 shots in the remainder of the period and got some quality rebounds from Nedeljkovic. It seemed only a matter of time before the Trout would solve the American netminder again.

Before the final frame was five minutes old, Sam Babintsev brought the Steelheads even with a near carbon-copy of his goal from last night. He corralled a pass from Bryson Cianfrone and fired one home, short side over the shoulder of Nedeljkovic. Cianfrone was dialed in, making several skillful passes in the game, none sweeter than that one to set up the game-tying tally. Nearing the midway point of the period, Jared Walsh gave the Fish the lead on a rocket of a shot that was too much for Nedeljkovic to handle. Coming on in relief, Spencer Martin blanked the Plymouth offence to give Mississauga the boost they needed. Riding their second third period comeback of the year, the Steelheads were lifted over the visiting Whalers by a score of 4-3.
