Windsor Spitfires News Release
Aaron Luchuk recorded his first Ontario Hockey League hat-trick, as the Spitfires squeaked by the North Bay Battalion in a 5-4 victory Saturday night before 5,131 at the WFCU Centre.
The 17-year-old scored in each period, doubling his season total to six, as Windsor (10-16-1-0) improved to five wins in six tries against the Eastern Conference.
Logan Brown (6) and Jamie Lewis (4) had the other goals for the Spitfires, while Alex Fotinos was brilliant in goal, making 34 saves for his eighth win of the season.
Luke Kirwan and Slater Doggett each chipped in a pair of assists.
Trailing 3-2 after 40 minutes, Ray Huether got North Bay (14-7-4-1) even, tipping home a Brenden Miller point shot for a power play goal at 12:54 of the third period.
Luchuk's third of the night, at 14:41, put the Spits back in front, before Jamie Lewis scored the eventual winner while shorthanded, into an empty net, at 18:41.
Mike Amadio (1G, 2A) banked one in on a Battalion power play with less than a minute to play. But Fotinos made a couple big saves down the stretch to preserve the win.
Evan Cormier (14 saves) took the loss in goal for North Bay.
The Spits head out on their annual Northern Ontario trip next week, with stops in North Bay (Thursday), Sudbury (Friday) and Sault Ste Marie (Sunday).
