BRIDGEPORT, Conn (Dec. 26, 2010) ¬" The Whale notched three power play goals and Chad Johnson made 22 saves to earn the shutout as Connecticut defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport. The Whale improves to 15-12-2-5 overall. The Sound Tigers drop to 15-14-1-2.
The Sound Tigers had the first two power play chances of the game, but it was the Whale that cashed in with the man-advantage in the opening frame. Midway through the period, Brodie Dupont found a rebound in the slot and fired it past Kevin Poulin to give the Whale a 1-0 lead. The Whale increased its lead to two with another power play goal. Mats Zuccarello held the puck deep in the Sound Tigers zone and found Jeremy Williams in the slot who beat Poulin high to make the score 2-0. Williams' 18th goal of the season came at 15:18 of the first period, and the Whale had a 2-0 lead heading to the locker room.
Neither side was able to muster many scoring chances in the second period and the score remained 2-0 until the early portion of the third. The Sound Tigers were unable to clear their zone, creating a two-on-one for the Whale. Chad Kolarik skated in slowly, held the puck as he drifted in the left circle and fired past Poulin to give the Whale a 3-0 lead. Kolarik increased the Whale lead to four with a power play goal at the 17:12 mark to round out the scoring.
The Sound Tigers went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage, snapping an game-streak of at least one power play goal. The three power play goals allowed also followed a streak of 44 of 47 penalties killed by the Sound Tigers heading into the game. Kevin Poulin made 21 saves in just his third regulation loss of the season.
