Albany Devils News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Albany Devils rallied late and took the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a shootout, but lost 5-4 Sunday evening at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Devils earned a point towards the standings - the first time they've accomplished the feat in 10 tries against the Penguins. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton won its AHL-best 24th game to improve to 24-7-0-0, while the Devils go to 12-17-0-1.
It seemed fitting that the only two teams in the AHL yet to fall in overtime or in a shootout couldn't resolve things in regulation. The Penguins are now 1-0 in OT and 3-0 in the shootout and the Devils are 2-0 in OT and 3-1 in the breakaway session.
Albany held two leads in the game thanks to first period goals by Nick Palmieri and Rob Davison. Palmieri opened the scoring 5:27 in with his six goal of the season, which was unassisted.
After the Penguins' Eric Tangradi made it 1-1 at 12:45, Davison found the back of the net for the first time this year to give the Devils a 2-1 advantage at 15:47.
Bryan Lerg evened things before the end of the period at 17:06 and Chris Collins gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton its first lead, 3-2, at 5:18 of the second.
Lerg would give his team another lead at 10:25, but first Michael Swift extended his point streak to four games and his goal streak to three games at 9:49 while operating with a man advantage.
Trailing 4-3 with less than 10 minutes to play, Darcy Zajac laid a hit and Dan Kelly puck handled through the neutral zone and into the offensive end, beating Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen at 10:25.
It was up to Jeff Frazee in overtime to keep the Devils alive and he did so by making back-to-back stops on breakaways by Penguins' leading scorer and top prospect Dustin Jeffrey. Jeffrey entered the game with eight points in three outings against Albany.
In the shootout, Nick Johnson, Keven Veilleux and Brett Sterling scored for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, while Chad Wiseman found the back of the net for Albany.
Frazee finished the game with 30 saves on 34 shots, while Thiessen had 25 saves on 29 shots.
The Devils went 1-for-1 on the power play and killed off their only penalty.
Next up for Albany, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers come to the Times Union Center on Tuesday, Dec. 28 for a 7 p.m. contest. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased online through thealbanydevils.com or at the box office.
