BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Jeremy Williams scored a power-play goal and added two assists as the Connecticut Whale defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-1 at Webster Bank Arena on Friday night. With the win the Whale improves to 40-30-2-6 overall. The Sound Tigers fall to 28-39-4-7.

The Whale controlled much of the play in the first period, but Mikko Koskinen's play in net kept the game scoreless until the 17:21 mark of the first period. The Sound Tigers were unable to clear the zone and Ryan Garlock made them pay, as his initial shot was stopped by Koskinen but his rebound attempt found the back of the net. It marked Garlock's third goal of the season and the Whale led 1-0 after a first period in which they out shot the Sound Tigers 18-3.

Blake Parlett pushed the Whale's lead to two just 1:11 into the second frame. Just as a Matt Donovan hooking penalty was set to expire, Parlett deflected Jeremy Williams' shot past Koskinen for his second goal of the year. David Ullstrom cut the deficit to one with a power-play goal of his own at 12:51 of the second period to make the score 2-1.

Physical play became the story of the second period and it played into the Whale's favor. Jeremy Colliton was given a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct following a hit on Pavel Valentenko. On the ensuing faceoff, Benn Olson and Kris Newbury exchanged jabs with their sticks and Olson was the only player sent off, resulting in a 5-on-3. On that power play, Jeremy Williams fired his 32nd goal of the season off the crossbar past Koskinen at 17:03, and the Whale carried a 3-1 lead to the third period.

The Sound Tigers were unable to mount a comeback charge that fans had grown accustomed to in the latter half of March with the bench shorthanded. Koskinen was pulled when the Sound Tigers went on a power play but the Whale put the game away for good when John Mitchell found the empty net with 54.2 seconds remaining in regulation to round out the scoring. Mikko Koskinen earned third start of the game honors, stopping 36 shots in the loss.

The two teams close out the home-and-home series tomorrow night at XL Center at 7 p.m.
