Westchester Knicks Control Energy with 108-104 Win
January 3, 2015 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS, January 3, 2015 - It came down to a game of threes for two teams that typically stay within the arc, both teams sinking back and forth shots in the last minute of play in anticipation for the win. Westchester would come out on top of the contest as the Knicks shocked the Energy, 108-104.
All five starters for the Westchester Knicks made contributions in the first nine minutes of the game, no substitutions made until the clock read 3:06. It was the opposite story for the Energy who only had three scorers in the first quarter, found in forwards Diante Garrett and Damien Wilkins, and New Rochelle, NY native Jarrid Famous. Knicks guard Orlando Sanchez led the way for Westchester with six points and six rebounds in the first.
Yesterday, when Westchester Coach Kevin Whitted was asked what factors contributed to the loss to Maine, his response was, "free throws, free throws, free throws." His words clearly made an impact on his players as the Dubs went a perfect 13/13 in the first half, the two teams standing at a tie 51-51 heading into the locker room.
Iowa went on an 8-0 run to start the second half, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc in the third quarter. The Energy led for the majority of the third, steered by guard Chris Allen with 10 points, but Knicks forward Ron Anderson Jr. tied it back up with just over four minutes to go in the third, scoring six in a row to give the Knicks the lead heading into the final quarter.
Iowa tied it back up 94-94 with 3:17 on the clock in the fourth. A sizzling combination from Knicks guard Langston Galloway and forward Marcus Ginyard would lift Westchester as Ginyard slammed one in with an assist from Andre Barrett. A steal from Galloway turned into a three point jumper and as if that wasn't enough, he followed that up with another made shot from beyond the arc, Barrett getting the assist there as well. Energy guard Chris Allen kept things exciting, answering back with a three of his own, Kalin Lucas adding his own sinker from the arc, but it would not be enough as the Knicks would hold onto the lead for the win.
Langston Galloway led Westchester with 17 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter. Marcus Ginyard followed with 15 points, adding six rebounds. Orlando Sanchez had a double-double, ending the day with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Seven Knicks total scored in double figures: Darnell Jackson had 14 points, Walker Russell Jr. and Thanasis Antetokounmpo each had 12, and Andre Barrett finished with 10.
Iowa Energy center Jarrid Famous, a former Westchester Community College player, landed a double-double for the Energy finishing with 16 points and 16 rebounds to add to Damien Wilkins' team-high 27 points. Diante Garrett added 17 points, five assists, and three rebounds, while Kalin Lucas and Chris Allen rounded out the double digit scoring for Iowa; Lucas with 16 points, Allen with 13.
Next up for Westchester: the Knicks will face the Fort Wayne Mad Ants at home next Friday, Jan. 9, 2015 for a 7:00 p.m. match-up. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Westchester Knicks Dancers 2015 calendar, courtesy of Doubletree Hotels.
