West Virginia Takes Series Opener over Legends 8-2

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The West Virginia Power built an early lead on their way to an 8-2 win over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night.

The Power scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Wyatt Mathisen singled with one out and stole second base. After Austin Meadows drew a walk, both runners moved up on a balk by Legends starter Matt Alvarez, and both scored on a single by Reese McGuire.

A four-run third inning increased the lead to 6-0. Meadows was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by McGuire. McGuire advanced to third on a single by Erich Weiss and scored on a double by Maximo Rivera as Weiss took third. Rivera and Weiss both scored on a double by Jeff Roy.

Lexington's Mauricio Ramos hit a solo homer with one out in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-1, but the Power came back with two runs in the fourth. Meadows and Edwin Espinal started the inning with singles. McGuire also singled, but was caught off first after the rounding the base as Meadows went to third and Espinal to second. A base hit by Weiss scored Meadows and Espinal, and West Virginia had an 8-1 lead.

The Legends scored the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Elier Hernandez.

West Virginia starter Cody Dickson (7-9) worked the first five innings and got the win. Alvarez (5-7) took the loss.

The series continues Wednesday night with Fan Appreciation Night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
